International Space Station at risk of running out of crew

The International Space Station (ISS) could run out of crew on board in November after the crash of an unmanned Russian Progress cargo ship that crashed last week by missing his booster, as recognized by a NASA spokesman.

The problem is that the Soyuz manned spacecraft, with which they are made crew changes, using rockets very similar, so if the fault is not resolved before that date, six residents have returned in the two Soyuz are coupled as a 'lifeline to the ISS and have not reached their relays.

"We will do what is safest for the crew and the space station," which could be operated temporarily from the ground, said today at a news conference program director of NASA's ISS, Mike Suffredini.

The accident has forced the restructuring of the release schedule because the Russian authorities have decided to suspend the Soyuz carrier rockets and change the flight schedule to and from the ISS.
Missions delayed

Was scheduled to return to September 8 Earth three of the six current crew of the space laboratory and the other three on 16 November. However, his return has been postponed until September 19, it is the only opportunity to land in daylight on the steppes of Kazakhstan in that month.

If not possible, then, the next opportunity would occur on October 27, ten days after the six months established orbital life of the Soyuz.

Between the two missions back in the calendar was the launch on September 22, another Russian spacecraft with a crew of three replacement of the first group but has been postponed several weeks.

Suffredini said that Russian authorities want to ensure that there is a similar problem in the Soyuz rocket and said that if the fault is not resolved before November 16 and it is not possible to travel safely to the ISS, the complex space will be temporarily displaced.
Ships 'lifeline'

The space station currently has two of these ships docked as a safety measure in case the crew had to be evacuated in an emergency. Another problem is that Suffredini said that the Soyuz are designed to be a maximum of six months docked to the station, so the return trip from November 16 could delay no longer.

The spacecraft Progress M-12M crashed minutes after its launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome (Kazakhstan) with about three tons of cargo (food, water, oxygen, fuel and scientific equipment) for the ISS.

If Roscosmos can solve the problem of the rocket, NASA wants the space agency launched the next Russian Progress ship with a new shipment in mid-October.

This mission will serve intermediate Roscosmos and NASA to ensure that the rockets are ready and could send a Soyuz replacement with new crew before 16 November.

Suffredini insisted that despite the loss of cargo, from a logistical point of view the space station "is very, very good shape."
The last ferry

Last July, the U.S. space shuttle Atlantis, with more cargo capacity than the Soyuz, took tons of spare parts and food before the retired NASA operation.

The accident has again open the debate on whether the withdrawal of the U.S. shuttle, as NASA did not have a ship ready for replacement and is dependent on the Russians to reach the ISS. Meanwhile, has passed the baton to the private sector design and construction of the vehicle that in the future send crew and cargo to the ISS.

The International Space Station is a project of 100,000 million dollars involving 16 countries and this is the first time you run out of people since the first crew arrived in November 2000.

Students accept the invitation of Pinera

Leaders will attend university in Chile tomorrow to the presidential palace to place face to face President Sebastian Piñera on structural changes to education that require more than three months.

The university accepted the invitation to dialogue made by the president on Friday, but warned that it "is not a work table or dialogue or negotiation," according to Camila Vallejo, spokeswoman for the federation that brings together students from universities state.

"It's just a site face to face with the president of the republic and give us the response for 12 points, the repression and the projects have entered the parliament," said Vallejo.

Before the warning, Piñera called yesterday for attending the presidential palace, "with goodwill, with the intention of solving the problem, not exacerbate the problem." He added that his is a call "that you are looking to build bridges that bring us closer to solutions, not building walls continue to follow us apart."

Piñera, who has faced three months of student demonstrations of high school and college, also included in his invitation to teachers, parents and principals.

The student demands included an end to profits, elimination of private banks in the financing of education, a guarantee that they will receive a quality education, desmunicipalización of basic and secondary education and completion of the shared financing.

And now the university added two new demands: that the government clarify the murder of a teenager early Friday night in the midst of turmoil that ended with two days of unemployment in the country, and the Chilean president stop sending to Congress draft legislation related to education, "for not having been consulted with stakeholders."

Last goodbye to Manuel

Hundreds of people gathered yesterday at the funeral of the young Manuel Gutierrez, 16, shot dead in riots in Santiago that framed the national strike called by the Confederation of Workers on Wednesday and Thursday last.

A brother of the victim and some witnesses say the shot came from a group of police, the authorities of the police force denied any involvement and even ruled out any internal investigation into the incident.

However, prosecutors opened a criminal investigation.

U.S. claims that the decision on the future of Al Megrahi depends on rebels

The U.S. government has stated that the decision on whether former Libyan spy Ali Mohamed Abdel Basset al-Megrahi, convicted in Britain for the 1988 Lockerbie bombing, which killed 270 people, must return to prison depends on rebels .

Al Megrahi is in Tripoli to the care of his family, according to which is "on the verge of death." Apparently, most of the time lies in a coma, connected to an oxygen tank and fed with serum intravenously.

The Scottish authorities decided in 2009 to release him on humanitarian grounds because he was suffering from cancer predicted a life expectancy of about three months. However, Al Megrahi was living comfortably in Tripoli surrounded by tight security until last week when the rebels entered the capital.

"Secretary of State (Hillary) Clinton has made clear, we believe that (Megrahi) should be in jail. The decision to release him was not correct," said the State Department spokeswoman, Victoria Nuland. In any case, added that the decision now rests with the Libyan National Transitional Council (CNT).

"We let them make their decisions as a government authority, and have agreed to take action on the matter," said Nuland. "We asked (the CNT), as soon as possible, to consider what to do with al-Megrahi, something they have committed," he added, as recorded in U.S. television channel CNN.

"It's a new day in Libya. He is a man (Al Megrahi) with blood on their hands, innocent lives. The same under the regime of Libya (Muammar) Gaddafi became a hero of him," said Nuland. "Presumably, a new and democratic Libya will have a different attitude to a convicted terrorist," he added.

Earlier, the NLC said that there will be a firm decision on the future of Al Megrahi until the election of the new government. In this sense, the CNT's justice minister, Mohamed al Alagi said the rebels did not allow extradition. "We will not give any Libyan national to the West", reported.

CNT President Mahmoud Jibil, qualified these statements. "What I was referring to Alagi legal aspect. I was not talking about a policy or position of the CNT. There is a misunderstanding of the statement made by Alagi" he said.

"Alagi can not make a political statement on behalf of the CNT or the Libyan population," said Jibril. "It depends on what the Libyan people decide in the future. The NLC is an interim body and can not take decisions on vital issues," he added.
